This is an optional Flite Test Float Set for the FT Simple Cub! Convert your Simple Cub over and enjoy flying over your nearest lake, pond, or appropriately sized body of water! This conversion includes everything needed to assemble the floats and install them onto your FT Simple Cub.
This kit is compatible with the FT Simple Scout and the FT Simple Stick.
NOTE: Package includes floats only.
Unfortunately, the price for that is heavy (albeit easy) construction and a sub-optimal mounting system that leaves a lot of flex in the floats. That flex is great when used to fly off of grass or other hard surfaces but it complicates trying to mount a water rudder, which is a must for flying off any body of water that you can't wade across.
Constructed per the video with a single coat of aluminum colored paint, these weighed 7.2oz and according to most float plane rules of thumb were too long by 5-10%. While this gave a slightly increased margin for error in pitch during water operations, it significantly impacted how my Simple cub flew, particularly the excessive area ahead of the CG reduced directional stability. After 2-3 flights with these, I switched to appropriately sized flat bottom foam floats from SeaPlane Supply, keeping the wire gear struts from the FT kit, but using stiffer spreaders and soldering an "N" strut between the fore and aft struts to spread the torque of landing between the fore and aft mounts. Even with the additional bracing, my new floats weigh 2.6 oz, only slightly more than the wheeled landing gear for the Cub.
In short, I recommend these if you "think" you want to try flying off water, but if you "know" you want to fly off water, look for other, lighter alternatives.
