This is the new and very powerful FrSky Taranis RC X9D Plus radio system. The radio also includes a Haptic Vibration Feedback System which provides an alternative feedback system to the existing voice and sound. If you are a club member this is a welcome addition without annoying your fellow club members. The Plus also includes a dual color LCD back-lit screen, allowing you to adjust from white to blue. Each radio ships with the newest firmware version to support the new haptic vibration feedback system. This combo includes the FrSky X8R 16ch Receiver with SBUS, Smart Port and Amplified PCB Antennas.
Note: The SWR check of the transmitter antenna is no longer available.
When it comes to possibilities the Frsky TARANIS sets a new standard. FrSky is well known for their frequency hopping ACCST technology, that takes advantage of the entire 2.4GHz band, resulting in excellent range and reliability, they now offer their first full transmitter system.
The TARANIS mixes the power of the “OPEN TX” open-source software with an unbelievable ergonomic case with 8 programmable switches, two twist knobs and two easy to get to lateral 'slider' pots, and not to mention the ultra-smooth quad bearing gimbals.
The TARANIS utilizes Voice Alerts from an internal speaker, versus just an annoying beeper. For things like; audible Count down timers, low voltage warnings, landing gear down warnings etc., just about anything can be programmed, you can even use your own voice. The SD card slot offers unlimited memory options and a USB port for upgrades even a headphone jack.
One of the best features of the TARANIS is its full telemetry capability, as well as RSSI signal strength feedback, there are 3 different programmable fail-safe modes and receiver lock, so no more crashes due to selecting the wrong model. If you have stock in other brand receivers or BNF’s, no worries the TARANIS has a JR style RF module slot, so you have the option of other brand modules such as the Orange DSM2/DSMX or Open LRS 433mhz module, or pop in another Frsky module to expand the transmitters capabilities even more with duel RF.
When you put it all together, between FrSky ACCST technology and the power of “OPEN TX” software and community, a ergonomic case with ultra-smooth smooth ball bearing gimbals and a large back-lit LCD with an included battery pack. You have versatility and power at an unprecedented value.
Love this radio and I bought this here to support there channel. Their great guys and sell only great products. Great service and fast delivery. River on 3rd Feb 2017
This transmitter is awesome, you can program anything you can think of into it. You can customize it however you want, I have been thinking about buying another one just incase and to have for others I take flying, this controller plugs into the computer with no headaches at all just plug and play. It's worked with all the sims I have, Makes the DRL sim so much fun to fly in. I've paired it up to all my quads and have bought a module to link to all my micro quads. Great Great Great controller. Would definitely buy again and again. OneOfThoseGuys on 22nd Jan 2017
This radio is great and isn't as hard as people make it out to be. I upgraded from a DX6I and this thing is like a rocket compared to a wheel. There are plenty of guides on how to program this radio and if you know what you want it's easy to achieve. It's done me well so far on my versacopter and now I just want to tinker with it because all the abilities it unlocks. The radio is great and I love the voice feature. 15/10 rating honestly. I love this radio and would gladly get it over any other radio (spektrum/futaba..etc.) All around it's great and super customizable. the only downside is I bought it just before it went on sale. This is an advanced radio. <--- and this is an understatement.
16 channels out of the gate, up gradable to 32 for God only knows why.
It will take a while before most will have this machine figured out well enough to use it beyond basic setups. (thank God for the setup wizard script onboard)
it can and will do anything youve ever wanted a radio to do and more. Till then, the setup wizard script makes it as close to out of the box usable as possible, without sacrificing flexibility
I do recommend getting openTX companion software to help you make setups faster and easier, as well as learn its ways.
Companion is free to download .. by all means do so for a test drive of this radio before you buy. Unknown on 15th Apr 2016
I said this because after 30 plus years flying I have never found a radio that does so much for so little. Your first reviewer mentioned something though. It is not for a first time user. Or at least if you are a first time buyer of a radio in computerized systems take the time to look this up on YouTube and go through some of the tutorials. I currently have Airtronics sd-10G, Flash 7 Hi-tech, Spektrum , and a Futaba tgf8 14 channel Super. All are great radios but none have all that this radio does. The firmware here is exceptional and yes you have to think in order to utilize the system. However there is forum after forum and RC universe etc has literally thousands of pages of discussions on the radio and people to instruct you on how to do new things with it. On YouTube there is a guy called painless 360 that takes you through a dozen instructional videos on how to do everything from turning it on to advanced programming. The settings are great and if you find something it does not have .... If you do.... then you can write code for it or get with other at the university online and they will develop something for you. Download the Amber voice setup for it and you will love it. There is even a Yoda program for voice lol. I think its awesome these guys added this radio as an option to the ones they normally sell. I would put it up against anything out there. The price is amazing considering what you get. Mine came with receiver, battery, neck strap, radio and a beautiful aluminum case. It can be intimidating at first but after a short time you will get the hang of it and love the radio. An interesting thing... RCUniverse.... They sell all kinds of things in the RC world yet I have NEVER seen someone sell their Taranis. Never not one time... (just watch now someone will lol) . Have fun with it, take time to learn and enjoy your new system. Like it says "if you think Spektrum or Futaba has the best 2.4 system.... think again...." The telemetry is great, voice is great and the connection is just awesome....

While this may not be a beginner's radio (reason for the 4 rating), it is a very powerful and flexible radio with more features than many more expensive radios. This radio is based around the OpenTX open source firmware so it is regularly being improved and is open to significant customization. I have yet to find anything that this radio cannot do and have been surprised by some creative uses others have found for this radio.
The built in FrSky transmitter uses ACCST protocol which has been rock solid for me. I use their D4R-II, X4R-SB, X6R, and X8R receivers and love having the current sensors in most of my aircraft (both hub and S.Port versions). I have started to play with other S.Port sensors with much success.
I also really like the ability to use JR modules so I can use BNF aircraft. Initially, I used the OrangeRX DSMX JR Module and have since move to a JR-DSMX custom circuit board that can be found on OSHPark (details available in the FliteTest forums). I really like the OSHPark JR-DSMX by John Prikkel for use with my Apprentice and Nano QX.
Other than the user interface, my biggest complaint with this radio is the NiMH battery it comes with. I have since replaced it with a 3S 1500mAhr LiFe battery (just fits into the battery compartment). Despite these faults, I highly recommend this radio. Unknown on 17th Nov 2015
If you just want to turn your radio on and fly, get a different transmitter. The Taranis does require you to invest some time and effort learning to program it, but once you do that it can do just about anything.
With the flip of a single switch you can change your throw rates, lower landing gear, drop flaps, add a few degrees of up elevator, turn on landing lights, start a timer, play your favorite song, tell you the battery voltage, and more. That is certainly overkill for one switch, but it's the power of the Taranis, being able to do what YOU want it to do.
I normally use the built-in FrSky protocol, which has been bullet-proof for me. Spektrum failed me too many time and as soon as I switched to FrSky all issues went away. Even at Flite Fest 2014 and 2015 there were no problems due to all the radios in use. The telemetry has proven very reliable as well. When I have to risk Spektrum for my UMX planes the plug-in Orange/Spektrum module gives me that flexibility.
While there may be better/fancier radios on the market, none of them can touch the value you get with the Taranis in the $225 range. Highly recommended!
